Declared by Colombia's Superintendency of Industry and Commerce in February 2026. It is the second fresh fruit in Colombia to hold a designation of origin, after the cholupa del Huila in 2007, and it covers six municipalities in northern Tolima.
Protected Designation of Origin
What a designation of origin is
It is a recognition granted by the state: it certifies that a product comes from a specific place and that its qualities come from there — the soil, the climate, the altitude, the way it is grown. It cannot be bought, and no individual can apply for one. A whole region applies, and it has to be proven with technical evidence.
It is the same instrument that protects Colombian coffee, Manchego cheese or Champagne. Once granted, nobody outside the delimited area may call their fruit "Mariquita Mangosteen".
How it was obtained
An association, not a company — In 2021 the founder created Asomangostino with growers from Mariquita and neighbouring municipalities. A designation of origin is requested by a collective; a single brand cannot do it.
The link to the land had to be proven — Saying the fruit is good is not enough. You have to document why mangosteen from this valley is different: volcanic soil from the Ruiz, altitude, rainfall pattern and a way of harvesting learned here.
Declared by the SIC in February 2026 — Colombia's Superintendency of Industry and Commerce announced it on 25 February 2026, with no oppositions, under Andean Community Decision 486. Per the Tolima Governor's Office, by Resolution 12867 of 24 February 2026.

Who applied for it
Three bodies filed it: the Chamber of Commerce of Honda, Guaduas and Northern Tolima, the Tolima Regional Centre for Productivity and Technological Development, and the municipality of San Sebastián de Mariquita. Behind them were the region's growers, Asomangostino among them.
Our part in it
Nicolás Gómez, co-founder of Susurros del Ruiz, took part in the process through Asomangostino, the growers' association he created in 2021. With a clarification that matters: neither Susurros nor Asomangostino filed the application, and it belongs to neither of them. It belongs to the region. We use it and celebrate it, like any other grower in the area entitled to it.
What it means if you are buying from us
Origin that does not rest on our word — You do not have to take our word that the fruit is from Mariquita. It is backed by a Colombian state registry, with a delimited area.
It covers fruit, pulp and powder — Everything that leaves here comes from the same protected area — fresh fruit, frozen pulp and powder alike.
It stacks with lot-level traceability — The designation says which region. Our lot records say which tree and which pick. Two different layers, and we have both.
